Safe Toddler Kabobs

August 13, 2014 By Danielle Leave a Comment

Safe Toddler Kabobs www.redkitchenette.comKabobs are fun to eat….even the word is fun to say.  And kids certainly love kabobs.  Whether fruit, snacks, veggies or meat, it’s always entertaining to be served food on a stick.  Plus, little ones may even be enticed to try a new food when it’s presented in an entertaining way; enter the kabob.  But as any parent of a toddler knows, those little wooden sticks with extremely pointed ends aren’t exactly what you’d call safe.  A five-year old: yes.  A two-year old: absolutely not.  So instead of making your little ones kabobs and constantly having to remove the food before serving, try my easy little trick for safe toddler kabobs.  Cocktail straws.  Yep, simple as that.  Colorful, bright, safe, and cheap (like you can get hundreds at a party store for a $1.50 cheap).  They will easily pierce fruit, cheese, tomatoes, cooked veggies, and more.  And if you can’t get the straw through, simply pierce with a regular skewer and then thread onto straws.

Some of my favorite kabobs for Audrey:

  • Any assorted fruit combination
  • Grape tomatoes, mozzarella and basil
  • Grilled chicken or fish with veggies
  • Sunbutter and jam sandwiches, cut into little squares
  • Tuna roll-ups
  • Cucumber & tomato drizzled with oil & vinegar
  • Pizza bites: tomato, cheese and torn bread
  • Mini-meatballs and sauce for dipping
  • Grilled, roasted or sautéed veggies (with or without a dip)
  • Turkey and swiss with pesto mayo
