Audrey’s first birthday was this past weekend. We celebrated at our beach house with food, family, swimming and sparklers. And cake. Lots of cake. 3 different ones in fact…. A strawberry shortcake “smush” cake adorned with fresh summer flowers, delicious cream cheese carrot cake courtesy of my sister, and an adorable cupcake Carvel ice cream cake. Did I go overboard? A little. But not knowing how she’d react to sugar for the first time, I wanted to give her a bit of variety. She liked all the cakes just fine, but found it much more entertaining to put the icing and cake all over her face and hair. The funniest, if not most ironic part of it all – she enjoyed eating the fresh strawberries off the smush cake more than anything else. And I swear I had nothing to do with it. Health nut I am, I still really love cake and ice cream. And one day I will help Audrey to understand that delicious treats like this are fantastic in moderation. But for now, I can think of nothing better than watching my little sugar rushed 1 year old open gifts with over-the-top enthusiasm and excitement. It was a perfect day.
