Bye Bye Bottle: Day 1

July 23, 2013 By Danielle 1 Comment

Today marks day 1 of Audrey’s transition from baby bottle to straw cup. Turning one in just under 2 weeks (what!?!?), I decided it was time to say “bye, bye, bottle”. While Audrey can drink from both a traditional sippy cup and a straw cup, she prefers the straw cup and so do I. Decisions like using a straw cup vs. a sippy cup are largely a matter of preference, but you can’t deny the speech & dental benefits of straw cups. Plus, opting for the straw cup eliminates the extra step of weaning her from baby bottle, to sippy cup, to straw/regular cup.

But back to this morning…. The transition definitely wasn’t seamless and I imagine it will take at least a few weeks, if not longer, to fully acclimate. For someone who can drink water just fine from a straw up, today she decided to let the milk fall right out of her mouth. I imagine the difference was a shock to her, and fully unexpected.  For right now, we will just work on the morning and daytime feedings.  The nighttime bottle will be the last to go as I know that will be the hardest.  Her baby bottle is a sense of comfort and straw cups just don’t have the same vibe. But thankfully, a few paper towels and a fresh bib later, she seemed to catch on to what we were doing. Sort of. She’s a good sport and didn’t complain, it’s just going to take a bit of getting used to.  Now me on the other hand, I’m not so sure I’m ok watching my baby girl turn into a full fledged little girl.

*Today we used the lollacup as Audrey’s straw cup; it is a valve-free, weighted straw sippy cup that allows infants to easily and effectively drink from a straw, even if the cup is tilted. It’s easy to use, easy to clean, and BPA-free.

[…] Well, this is going to be a lot harder than I thought…..As you can see by the complete look of disdain on Audrey’s face, she’s not exactly thrilled with me.  Here’s what I’ve learned in the past week since Bye Bye Bottle: Day 1 – […]
